SPSSNY is the student chapter of PSSNY – Pharmacists Society of the State of New York. The aim of this society is to unite the pharmacists of the state for mutual assistance, encouragement, and improvement in order to maintain the standard of pharmacy practice at a high professional and ethical level.

SPAWNY is an organization of students of pharmacy dedicated to the advancement of the profession of pharmacy. Increased membership and leadership resources, proactive political action, comprehensive community outreach, enhancement of student skills and education and networking with community practitioners will provide a solid foundation that promotes the contemporary concepts of pharmaceutical care. SPAWNY will encourage the development of student abilities to enter the profession of pharmacy upon graduation. Members are represented at the annual Pharmacy Day in Albany to advocate progressive legislation and regulation that supports public health.

Working locally with pharmacists in WNY and across NYS, our mission is to protect the rights of student pharmacists and licensed pharmacists in the field. We also seek to advance the pharmacist’s scope of practice and provide the opportunity for the profession to grow. Collectively, our voices and actions help to push the profession forward as a whole, and you as a student can play a vital role in making that happen.

One of the current advances include the permission for student pharmacists to immunize. The resolution was proposed to PSSNY by two of our own SPAWNY liaisons, and in just a few years’ time, the bill has made it to the desk of Governor Cuomo.  Ability to immunize is specifically important to us as students because it expands our scope of practice as interns and helps us prepare to vaccinate patients throughout our careers as pharmacists.

SPAWNY/SPSSNY members have the opportunity to participate in events such as the Pharmacists’ Society of the State of New York’s Midwinter and Summer Conference, PLAID Day, and Albany Pharmacy Advocacy Day. The Midwinter and Summer Conference gives pharmacists and students across NYS to come together, collectively discuss important issues we are facing and potential resolution, and network at cocktail and banquet events.  PLAID and Albany Day allow pharmacists and students to voice their concerns directly to legislators and assemblymen in NYS.
